The Top 5 New Typography Trends for 2021

We live in strange times, and with it come some out-of-the-ordinary trends that you would not have thought possible prior to any pandemic. Society is fractured between the vaccinated and unvaccinated, everything seems politicized, and people are just plain losing their marbles having to deal with all that while going in and out of lockdown.

All that activity has led to new societal trends both online and off, with some people looking to modern fonts, and others to more classical looks. Here’s a look at the five newest trends in the world of typography that might get you thinking “why?” or “that makes sense.”

Back to the Classics

With so much uncertainty abound, it gives many great comfort to harken back to the good old days when everything was fine. That’s why some of the classic styles are back in for typography, offering a fond look back on what once was and could be again.

Styles like Futura Now and Helvetica Now can give us a glimpse of those old scenes like album covers, when there were actual albums, book covers, when we actually read paper and not screens, as well as posters, like those that adorned our teenaged walls all those years ago.

Conscious Minded

Nothing says “we need to be more mindful of ourselves and our environment” like over a year in lockdown. With that said, today’s typography trends include a look at some good-feeling, genuine styles that bring out the best in us. That’s what GT Alpina offers not as a nostalgic style, but more of a self-aware and positively impactful tone.

Efficiency and Versatility

With more people than ever working from home, it’s important to remain fresh and efficient. That’s what Anguita Sans of the Sans Serif fonts offers. This new style features clean vertical lines that are perfect for short bursts of text or as headings, and it can provide the ideal look on both digital and print platforms. That makes it very versatile indeed.

Variety to Stay Engaged

Staying focused and on task or message is key, and making it easier to do that are several Slab Serif font styles that we recognize. Breton offers a geometrically pleasing pattern to your typography that fits nicely with other styles as a heading or branding staple.

Similarly, Klose Slab offers a vintage typeface that is great for displays as it is available in four distinct styles of its own: condensed, normal, semi-expanded, and expanded. So you can get the right feeling out of your typesetting with just one font.

Draw Attention and Keep It

Catching those eyeballs is what it’s still all about and that’s why Beatrice Display makes the list. It offers exceptional originality in an eye-catching style, which is why it will be very popular with designers this year.

There is no telling where we go from here with typographical styles. But given all that we have gone through together in this world over the past couple of years, what is certain is that the styles we have grown accustomed to will adjust to fit what happens next.
