VLK Commemorates Groundbreaking of MISDs Jean Coleman ES

(Fort Worth, Texas) – On Monday, June 21, 2021, VLK Architects joined Midlothian ISD in the groundbreaking for the Jean Coleman Elementary School. Funded by the district’s 2016 bond program, the new Jean Coleman Elementary will have the capacity for 750 students in grades pre-k through fifth grade.

Midlothian ISD chose this school’s namesake in honor of Jean Coleman, who served MISD for over 25 years as a second-grade teacher for Midlothian ISD at L.A. Mills Elementary. Coleman was a mentor to fellow MISD teachers and an active member of the Midlothian community. To honor her memory, her family established the Jean Coleman Award for Excellence in Reading Education in 2019, which is awarded to a second-grade teacher in our district.

“We are excited for this new campus and the unlimited potential it holds for our students as they grow into future leaders. Our Bond Oversight Committee of parents, community and staff members worked in collaboration with VLK Architects to create an innovative learning space designed to lead the future of education. We cannot wait to see the great things that will happen here,” said Dr. JoAnn Fey, Superintendent of Midlothian ISD.

The school will feature three classroom wings with high ceilings and clerestory windows. Each two-grade classroom wing connects to the central library, which features a tiered wood reading hill. In addition, every classroom has folding glass walls with an adjacent collaboration area to provide flexible learning environments. The cafeteria performance space extends to an outdoor platform and learning courtyard. Jean Coleman Elementary is set to open in August 2022.

“VLK is proud to partner with Midlothian ISD and Imperial Construction on the next iteration of district innovation at the elementary school level. We look forward to another successful project,” said Ross Rivers, AIA, Principal of VLK Architects.

Other consultants include Imperial Construction; L.A. Fuess Partners; Teague Nall and Perkins, Inc.; Foodservice Design Professionals; RWB Consulting Engineers; and Estes, McClure & Associates Engineering and Consulting.
