Building a Roof?

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT STEPS ONE NEEDS TO KNOW IF THEY WANT TO START BUILDING A ROOF?

Building solid and stable roofs never comes easy for anyone who gets to be involved in the process, be it the carpenters and/or house owners. It takes much patience and a clear vision of what they will be creating. There are certainly different shapes of roofs. Most of them are triangular, which usually gives the roofs their strength, but let us briefly mention some parts of a roof before jumping to the steps one needs to follow in order to build one.

Some of the components that go into constructing roofs may be known to you, but we are keeping everyone updated, guys. So, there is the ridge, a long board that keeps the beam forming parts of the internal framework of the roof (rafters) nailed to it. The ceiling joists are part of them as well. They stop the ridge from falling and the rafters  from spreading. The joists also complement that triangle shape with the rafters. There are other components like fascia and soffits, pinch binders and props and they are all added up to the strengthening of the roof.

Now, going back to the main topic, we are going to present some of the starting steps to build a roof. At first, you need a 90 degrees right angle triangle, because that will help you work on the length of the rafters (always taking into consideration that the span of the roof and the pitch of it are known to you). The wall plates and the rafters are disordered, so they must be fixed in a perfectly square and level form. Consequently, they ought to be parallel, on the same distance at each end of the roof, and everywhere in between. A very useful method can be used if you need to check for the ideal 90 degrees corners between the wall plates and it is called the 3 4 5 method (The key element here is the proportions used, not the unit of measurement. The 3-4-5 method could also be the 6-8-10 or the 9-12-15 method since the proportions are the same). Then, find the straightest joist to level the wall plate, place it from one wall plate to the other and put a 1800 mm spirit level on it. Calculate the common rafter lengths after you make sure the wall plates are square and level.

Once the roof is on, you can start the fascia/soffit installation, ideally before the tiles or other roofing material go on. Common materials for the job include pine, ply, cedar, UPVC etc.
