GIF or Jif? Peanut butter maker smoothes out long-standing social media dispute

Have you ever been eating a peanut butter sandwich, watched a looping animated image on social media, and wondered, “is it pronounced G-if of J-if’?

It’s an unanswered question that has left even some of the most brilliant minds perplexed. Apparently, seeing so many people inappropriately uttering their product’s name has also left a bad taste in the mouth of the makers of Jif Peanut Butter. So the manufacturer has taken to social media to set the record straight:

Actually, Jif joined forces with GIPHY.COM (the top source of GIFs) to put a lid on the “JIF vs GIF” debate.

“It’s been the most polarizing debates of our time, and we’re not talking about whether pineapple goes on pizza,” Jif stated on its website.  “No, we’re talking about the dispute that’s dragged our good name into the front lines of pronunciation combat. We’re talking about JIF vs GIF. Soft G vs Hard G. And we think it’s time you talked about it, too.”

So how do you pronounce it? The consensus is that GIF is pronounced with a hard “G,” like “good,” or “great.”  To drive the point home, the companies came up with several funny GIFs explaining the difference from Jif. You can see them by clicking here.

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. So it makes sense that the “G” should be uttered with a “Guh.”

They even created a special edition jar of peanut butter to spell out the difference. It has Jif on one side and Gif on the other. The jars are already sold out.

So hopefully this will solve this eternal mystery once and for all. Except for one thing: Why is the peanut butter called Jif?
