Driver charged after deadly wreck on East Freeway near Cloverleaf
A man is dead and another is facing charges after a violent crash Thursday night along the East Freeway.
Sean Nelson was riding with another man in a Dodge pickup that was hauling a trailer in the eastbound lanes of the freeway when the two stopped on the left shoulder to clamp down their cargo shortly after 10 p.m., according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Nelson was standing on the right side of the trailer as cars whizzed by, authorities said.

Moments later, police say 24-year-old David Carillo was driving a pickup eastbound when he veered out of the main lanes and onto the shoulder, directly in Nelson’s path. Carillo then struck the trailer and Nelson, police say.
Carillo’s truck landed on its side. The force of the crash detached the pickup from the trailer, causing the pickup to slowly drive into a bushy median separating the main lanes and the frontage road.
Nelson was pronounced dead on scene.
Police allege Carillo was intoxicated when he crashed into Nelson and charged him with intoxication manslaughter, which could land him in prison for up to 20 years.
