Drug Test Disclaimer: The lesser-known delta-8 THC is a double bond isomer of the more common delta-9 THC. Although it might not have the same strength of delta-9, delta-8 THC still has the ability of producing a high, with added therapeutic benefits. If you are required to drug test, take at your own risk.

What Is Delta 8 THC?

Delta 8 THC is one of more than 100 cannabinoids present in cannabis. Processors extract and refine it, as it occurs naturally within the cannabis flower only in small quantities. Unlike other cannabinoids, it interacts with the endocannabinoid system of the body – specifically the nervous system's CB1 receptor – to bring its psychotropic effects to bear. Despite the variation in cannabis in the natural concentrations of Delta 8 and Delta 9, they communicate with the nervous system in a similar way when concentrated.

The Difference Between Delta 8 And Delta 9 THC?

Quick Chemistry lesson for the uninitiated: The name delta element refers to the double bond, and both Delta 8 and Delta 9 have double bonds, the difference being where the double bond is located. Organic chemistry deals with carbon atoms – tons of carbon atoms, their chains – and the respective "8" and "9" names in those canabinoids refer to the position of the dual (Delta) bond in the chain. Delta 9 has a double bond on the chain's 9th carbon, Delta 8 on its 8th. Therefore, what this actually comes down to is that a dual bond would have more electrons than single carbon bonds, and interact with the endocannabinoid system differently. This doesn't seem like a major difference, but the position of the double bond can be very important when we're talking about subatomic particles.

Delta-8 THC for Nausea and Appetite

One of delta-8 THC's most well-established applications is as an anti-emetic (nausea reducer) and a stimulant to appetite. In fact, U.S. patents on its use as an anti-emetic already exist. This approach is particularly useful for patients receiving cancer treatment who frequently experience nausea. It was also indicated as being especially well suited for youngsters.

Researchers gave delta-8 THC in one study to children aged 3–13 who were undergoing treatments for cancer. Those taking delta-8 THC were able to avoid vomiting, and had nausea levels improved. Interestingly, researchers have found these kids had no psychoactive effects from taking delta-8 THC. Although adults typically experience mild psychoactive effects with delta-8 THC, the children appear to be exempt from that particular effect in this study.

Delta-8 THC for Cancer

Also, Delta-8 THC was investigated for potential uses against cancer itself. One study has looked at lung cancer infected mice. Those that were treated with delta-8 THC for a 20-day duration had reportedly reduced tumor sizes by the end of their treatment. Researchers also found that survival time went up when delta-8 THC was used to treat mice with cancer.

We need to do more work to learn exactly how we can use delta-8 THC effectively in treating cancer. While more work needs to be done before we can treat cancer with delta-8 THC with confidence, these findings give hope that this cannabinoid will be of use in the ongoing battle against this disease.

Delta-8 THC for Memory

Delta-8 THC may also be a beneficial neuroprotectant in addition to managing appetite, nausea and probably cancer. It is an important development for dementia sufferers and Alzheimer's disease. One research showed mice being treated with delta-8 THC significantly raised their acetylcholine levels in the brain.
