The Boom Overture Supersonic Aircraft

Proposed Boom Overture Supersonic Airliner

Based in Denver, Colorado. Boom Supersonic/Technology has signed an agreement with United Airlines for releasing the Boom Overture commercial airliner ($200M). This would introduce supersonic air travel to the commercial market and allow for travel of up to Mach 1.7. This is past the barrier of sound and twice the speed of some of the most popular commercial airliners.

As per United and Boom, this supersonic aircraft is scheduled to be rolled out in 2025. While the projected timeline for boarding passengers is sometime in 2029. If all goes well during its testing and production. This would become the first large commercial aircraft, to be net zero carbon from initial release. (1)

Performance

One of the biggest features of the Boom Overture is its cruise speed. As per the manufacturer, the Overture is capable of traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Heathrow Airport (LHR) in approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes as opposed to 6 hours and 30 minutes. (2)

In a standard configuration, this aircraft is capable of carrying between 65 to 88 passengers. It is equipped with 3 Rolls-Royce medium bypass turbo fans with 15,000 to 20,000 pounds force of thrust each. The maximum range on this aircraft is said to be 4,250 nautical miles, while its maximum cruise altitude is approximately 60,000 ft.

Also, while able to cruise at a speed of Mach 1.7. The Overture is capable of reaching a maximum cruise speed of around Mach 2.2. This is mostly used when traveling to and from transoceanic destinations. (3)

Interior

Many internal features and specifications have yet to be announced. Although the Overture is said to have a spacious cabin, where passengers have enough room to maneuver. Plus, you can find in seat entertainment screens, a number of windows to provide abundant light, along with contactless technology.

The windows in the cabin are meant to be large, while each passenger is also meant to have dedicated underseat storage and direct aisle access.

  • This commercial aircraft has been optimized to operate off of 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
  • As per Boom Supersonic, the Overture costs significantly less than a subsonic widebody aircraft to operate.
  • The XB-1 is a “demonstrator” aircraft of the Overture, that began flight tests in 2021.
  • The first flight for this aircraft is scheduled for sometime in the year 2026.
