How to Maintain Your Boiler UK

Nothing is worse than having a broken boiler, especially when it is freezing cold outside. To ensure that your boiler won’t leave you chilly just when you need warmth the most, there are several tips to remember on how to maintain your boiler UK.  Alternatively, you contact one of our plumbing contractors to either repair or fit a new boiler.

Install and Set the Timer on a Room Thermostat

Now is the time to fit a room thermostat if you don’t have one yet. Come up with a plan and set your timer when you will need the boiler to work throughout the day. Doing so will ensure that the boiler doesn’t work hard in times when you don’t really need it in first place.

Modern boilers allow you to leave your home unheated when it is empty and programming the unit to heat the house 30 minutes before you need it. It will keep your home warm enough when it matters.

Keep Your Boiler Clean and Clear

Use a damp and soft cloth to wipe your boiler and dry it afterwards. For boilers located in a cupboard, make sure that you allow the recommended clearances of the manufacturer to allow safe access and servicing of the device. It is also important to ensure that there are no blockages in the grilles, flues, and air vents.

Avoid removing the case. Only Gas Safe registered engineers have the legal qualification to remove the casing of boilers. Call a professional if you suspect that there is an issue with your unit. Doing it on your own with gas can be perilous and may result to leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, and explosions.

Maintain the Hot Water Cylinder

Set the cylinder thermostat at 60°C or 140°F. It is already hot enough for killing off dangerous bacteria present in the water. However, you still have to be careful because this is still hot enough to scald.

You can install a thermostatic mixing valve for extra safety to automatically make sure that your tap’s hot water is at a safe temperature. You can easily lag your tank yourself if it is not insulated. You can also insulate the surrounding hot water pipes.

Turn Down Your heating

You can try to turn down your room thermostat by one degree and leave this for on a day. You can turn it down a degree further if it still feels warm enough for you. Continue to do so until you already feel somewhat too cool then turn this back one degree up again.

Monitor the Boiler Pressure

One more way to make sure that the central heating system performs well is to check to see if your boiler pressure is too low or too high. You will need to re-pressure it if the pressure is much lower than what it must. On the other hand, it will require bleeding if the pressure is too high. If you have no idea how to do this, you can always get the help of a Gas Safe registered engineer.

These are some of the things you need to do to properly maintain your boiler and keep it in top shape so you never have to wake up freezing cold ever again.
