The average costs of a vinyl patio cover are between $5 and $13 a square foot installed. Vinyl is one of the lowest-cost options for any cover. It is easy to work with and comes in many different styles. It is also fairly low maintenance but is not as durable as other materials. Vinyl can be made into pergolas, lattice, panels, and many other roofing styles. You may be limited in colors and overall patterns.
The cost of an insulated patio roof ranges from $26 to $59 a square foot installed. Insulated patio roof panels help prevent the patio from becoming overheated. This is a particularly good idea if your patio has some type of enclosure or walls like a gazebo. Insulated panels can be made of fiberglass, aluminum, or wood. They come in several different styles and can be added to many different types of roofs or covers. The material being insulated and the overall structure style dictate the final cost.
It was a little bit difficult to figure out where to dig the post holes. I wanted them to be exactly 9.5′ from the roof edge, but the houses foundation was recessed 2′ from the roofs drip edge and stuck out 26 from under the bay windows. How was I going to get an accurate measurement? All sorts of neat tools I saw people use on TV shows and formulas from various math classes flashed through my mind. Here’s what I did:
Make sure the post extensions are even.
On a one-story house, it is often best to attach the ledger for a patio roof just below the houses eaves.
On a two-story house, you can usually tie the ledger into a band joist , located between the floors, as shown below. Find the band joist by measuring down from a second-story window.

Building a porch roof costs $16 to $30 per square foot. For a 200-square-foot structure, this ranges from $3,200 to $6,000. A significant portion of the total depends on the material, which usually matches whatever you have for the rest of the house.

Gable roof is the most commonly found type of porch roof. It has a shape of a triangle with a certain pitch and sloped sides. Whether you are thinking of adding a gable porch to an existing roof or building a new one, it is beneficial to help your shed water and snow.
Here is the guide on how to build a gable roof over a porch you may follow:
To structure the roof, take your 2×6 boards. You can cut them down as needed. Since they will overhang a little bit over the patio, you need to make sure that you do not cut them down at the same length as the patio.
They have to be a bit longer than the patio. If you have cut them down, you can begin to arrange them so that they cross the joist beams and create a perpendicular pattern.
Make sure they are evenly placed across the top of the patio. Keep them in place by installing galvanized deck screws.
Most homeowners will agree that a roof deck is worth the price. Not only will it protect you from the elements when youre outside, but it will also improve your homes curb appeal and resale value if youre looking to sell it in the future. Contact your local roofing contractor to see what they can do to help.
Anchor a ledger to a masonry wall with expanding anchor bolts. Begin by marking a line across the wall for the ledgers top edge. Drill holes for the expanding anchors every 16 inches or as specified by local codes, insert the anchors, hold the ledger in place, and tap it with a hammer to indent the anchor locations on its back face.
Remove the ledger, and drill bolt holes where the bolt tips have left marks. Push or hammer the ledger back onto the bolts, recheck for level , add washers and nuts, and then tighten the bolts.
Summer may be over, but its the perfect time to start building a roof over your deck for next years sunny season. If youre looking to enjoy the great outdoors right from your backyard while still getting some relief from the sun or rain, a roof over your deck or patio is the perfect solution.
So, how do you go about it? You may want to just get it over with and do it yourself, but sometimes its better to hire a professional who can get it done efficiently. In this blog, were going to cover the benefits of building a roof over your deck, how to do it, and the average costs. Expert advice on how to attach a patio roof to a house, with step-by-step instructions and construction diagrams.
A house-attached patio roof takes advantage of the houses structure by supporting one end of the roof on a ledger mounted horizontally to the house. The ledger, typically a 2 by 6, is usually designed to hold one end of the patio-roof rafters. Locating and mounting the ledger is normally a fairly easy process; the ledger should be attached before the foundation is built for a deck, patio roof posts, and other structure.
Adding a Gable Roof to an Existing Roof To tie into the side of an existing roof , put a new roof truss on the walls of the addition , brace it upright, then snap chalklines on the shingles to mark the center line of the new roof valleys, where old and new roofs will connect.

The rest of the frame I assembled on solid ground, not wanting to hold everything in place with one hand while installing decking screws with the other.
Joists
Extend the posts with 2×4 and 2×6 cedar so that they project beyond the top of the ledger, nailing every 4 in. with 16d casing nails up to the beam height. Cut a 2×10 beam member to length and shape the end. Rest it in the joist hanger, level it and mark the height on the post. Cut only the post 2x6s at that height with your circular saw. Cut the center 2×4 9 in. higher .
Use .60 foundation-grade treated 2x4s and 2x6s for the lower post sections and the footings . You may have to special-order them, but the added longevity is worth the money and trouble. For the above-ground base skirt framing and sheathing, standard .40 treated material will work just fine.
The base skirts are designed to float, that is, slide up and down the fixed posts that they encase. Thats especially important when they rest on a slab or stone surface in cold regions where frost can lift patios when the ground freezes. The skirts can move up and down during freeze/thaw cycles, but the posts, which extend below frost depth, stay putwithout lifting the entire structure. So when you frame and trim the pilaster base skirts, make sure everything fits loosely.
If the posts have to penetrate a concrete or stone surface, cut a 20- in. square hole for digging the footings . Use a circular saw with a diamond blade and dont worry about making it pretty; the skirt will cover the hole. To prevent settling, just be sure to pack the soil well as you backfill around the posts.
Unless it will be protected from rain by the houses eaves or a solid roof, a roof ledger that is fastened directly to a house with wood siding should be capped with galvanized metal Z-flashing that tucks up under siding to prevent water from seeping in behind it.
Where integral flashing isnt possible, such as on a stucco wall, use Z-flashing and caulk the top edge. This is a job you must do before fastening the overheads roof rafters in place.
You can buy L- or Z-shaped flashing or bend it yourself. To bend sheet-metal flashing, make a form by clamping two 2 by 4s together on each side of the metal, and then hammer the metal to create a sharp edge at each fold.
Fit the flashing in place, caulk the top edge, and nail it with galvanized nails long enough to penetrate at least 1 inch into the structural members. Then caulk the nail heads.
If the house is sided with shingles or lap siding, simply slip the metals top edge up under the bottom edge of the shingles or siding as far as possible.

A freestanding patio is a covered patio that sits on your backyard without being supported by the house or other buildings.
Unlike the ones that rely on the roof, this patio features, at least, four posts that support the cover. That is why it is called a freestanding patio cover.
Since it sits on its own, it is varied in sizes and heights. It means you can build any patios that suit your style very well.
The roof over a deck is usually called a patio cover. This attached structure provides protection from sun and rain and can either have a solid or open roof. Pergola is another name for deck or patio roofs. This is typically characterized as an open roof thats supported by posts or columns. They provide filtered shade to outdoor living areas.
The cost of a fiberglass patio cover is between $16 and $39 a square foot installed. Fiberglass is one of the materials considered to be the gold standard by many contractors. It is attractive, durable, and very easy to maintain. Fiberglass comes in lattice, pergola, panel, and many different styles, colors, and shapes. Fiberglass is sometimes combined with other materials to give it greater durability. It is also a good insulator, making it a useful option for roofs where the sun is directly overhead.
Now you have the structure of a freestanding patio cover. You can begin to cover the patio with the materials of your choice such as lattice wood, translucent fiberglass, wood and shingles, metal panels , boards and netting, or canvas shade sails.
The structure that you have just made is the simplest one. There are various kinds of structures available that suit your patio very well.
But you have to remember to double-check the level of the whole patio before adding the roof. For more freestanding patio cover ideas, check out these ten fantastic patios.
Decks and patios enhance any homes living and entertainment space, and adding a roof to that extension can further increase their function and value. However, were sure youd like to know the average cost to build a roof over a deck before you make any decisions.
Unfortunately, we wouldnt be able to tell you how much it would exactly cost to add a roof to your deck without scheduling a consultation and coming to your home. But we can give you an average range of prices that it would most likely fall within. They include:
The cost will vary depending on the professionals hired, materials used, square footage, and weather conditions.
It is almost similar to the first method, but to make the patio roof a little bit higher, you will need to remove the house gutter and place the back channel a bit higher.
Because the gutter is removed, you will need to install transfer flashing from the roof of the house to the patio. It allows you to add over a hundred millimeters of extra height.
The cost to build a covered patio attached to a house ranges from $500 to $25,000 on average. A small bistro patio with a sailcloth cover is at the lowest end of this cost. An outdoor kitchen patio with a full roof is at the high end. Because patios come in so many different sizes and styles, the cost range is large. Attaching a patio and cover to the house allows more options. Attached pergolas 1 and awnings can be less expensive than freestanding gazebos.
Cut two 4-ft. lengths of 2×10 and tack them between the 2×4 rafter and ceiling tie parts to lay out the curved decorative braces . Mark the lengths at the 2x4s. Bend and clamp a thin board and trace arcs about 7-1/2 in. apart on both sides. Cut them with a circular saw and jigsaw and nail them into place.
Having breakfast outdoor is just a terrific idea to spend your weekend. You do not need to take a road trip to make it true.
You can do it right in your covered patio in your backyard. This freestanding patio features a plastic cover that sits perfectly on the beamed ceiling.
It helps you keep the glare and heat at bay. You can still enjoy your breakfast outdoor even though it is raining because the cover is water resistant.
The good thing about plastic materials is they are usually less expensive than wooden materials.
Therefore, this freestanding patio cover will just make a perfect shade without burning a hole in your pocket.

This patio roof complements the exterior very well. The soft beige color provides a relaxed ambiance to the patio so that it can be a great place to call it a day.
The pergola style allows natural light pass through which makes the patio shaded partially. You will not miss the warm of the sun when sitting in the patio.
Side-roof-trims
Use 1×4 lumber for the side trims. Make a 5 degree cut to one end of the trims. Attach the trims to the sides of the roof and lock it into place with 2 1/2 screws. See plans for a 12×16 pergola on my blog, as well.

Most patios are located beside the home. This makes them easily accessible and still leaves plenty of space for the rest of the yard and landscaping. But patios can be located elsewhere on the property, particularly if you want them located beside another feature like a pool, tennis court, or fountain.;
The patio cover can also have different positions. If the patio is located beside the home, the cover can be either attached to the home, extending out over it, or it can be freestanding. When the patio is moved away from the home, the patio must be freestanding, limiting your choices for the cover. Both attached and freestanding covered patios have a wide range of costs because patios and covers come in many sizes and materials.

The cost of an aluminum patio roof cover averages $20 to $70 a square foot installed. There are many different aluminum types for patios. You can find aluminum lattice, pergolas, and panels that come in several different gauges. Aluminum can be louvered, installed in slats, or combined with other materials. The thicker the aluminum, the longer-lasting its appearance but the higher its cost. Extruded aluminum costs more than rolled aluminum. Insulated aluminum costs more than extruded and rolled.
After that it was simple but repetitive work. I attached 1 x 6 boards to the top of the joists, and then screwed the corrugated metal roof to them. The most difficult part was getting the upper end of the metal sheets to go under the drip edge and roof decking of the house and to butt up against a bead of clear-drying roof cement I had put in there with a caulking gun. Also, putting a bead of sealer along the edge of the metal sheets before overlapping them was a bit demanding, though absolutely necessary.
The job was done at that point. As for the corrugated metal roofing, I chose rubber washer metal-into-wood screws with ¼ bolt heads and used a ¼ magnetized drill adapted socket to put them in. That type of screw goes into every valley at the top and bottom ends of the panels and every other valley throughout the rest of the roof, into the 1 x 6 boards placed 24 on the center.
