If you are measuring for hinged French patio doors, you will start from inside your home. Looking at the interior of your French patio doors, measure the width. Start at the center, just as we would do for sliding patio doors, and measure horizontally from one end of the panel to the other.
To measure for the height of the hinged French patio doors, extend your tape measure vertically from one end of the door panel to the other.
Again, feel free to measure both the interior and exterior of your patio doors, if you so choose. Remember to record the width and height dimensions in your measurement guide.
Let’s start with casement windows. Measure the width of the window at the base. Extend your tape measure horizontally, from jamb to jamb or trim to trim.
To measure the height of a casement window extend your tape measure vertically, from header to cell or drywall the sill. Be sure to capture both width and height measurements.
Now, let’s look at how to measure a double- or single-hung window Measure the width of the window at the center where the two sashes meet. Extend your tape measure horizontally, from jamb to jamb or trim to trim.
To measure the height of a double- or single-hung window, extend your tape measure vertically from header to sill or drywall to sill. Be sure to capture both width and height measurements.
If you follow these simple steps, youâll be well on your way to a new patio door.

Sliding patio doors are perfect for modernising balcony spaces, as they refuse to take up any space when in use. Bathing rooms in warming natural light, modern double glazed patio doors will considerably enhance your homes thermal performance too, in comparison to out-dated, inefficient balcony entrances. High rise balconies vulnerable to the ravages of the Great British weather will also benefit from weather-resistant, low maintenance, and enduring materials such as uPVC and aluminium keeping balcony spaces looking and performing at their very best for longer, with the least amount of hassle involved.
Smaller balconies may wish to consider modern tilt and turn windows instead.
Begin by measuring the width across on the inside of the door. Measure across the inside at the top of the frame and the bottom, and select the smallest value as your measurement if the two differ. You may need to install a new jamb for an older home with nonstandard-sized jamb depths to get your hinged doors to fit properly.
If youre installing a brand new patio door in a recently constructed building, youll want to start by measuring the width between vertical studs at the top, middle, and bottom of the door frame. These two measurements shouldnt vary by more than two inches. If they do, the frame needs correcting before installation.
The door frame should match the width of the wall when you measure for depth. For the height, youll measure from the sill to the underside of the door trim. Depending on whether your door swings in or out, youll want to take the measured width of one door and mark the path of its radius to ensure there is sufficient room for it to swing open.
The wide expanse of glass on a sliding door lets in light, heat, cold, sound and potentially the prying eyes of neighbors. Installing drapes over the door improves the room’s insulation against all these things. To block light most efficiently and still leave full use of the door, plan to attach the curtain rod to the wall, not the inside of the door frame. This mounting system allows the drapes to clear the glass completely when open and to block the glass completely when closed.
Measure the height from the floor to the top of the door frame on the right side and the left side. If the measurements differ, keep both lengths to order custom drapes, or the longer length to order a finished product. With a finished drapes, you might have to hem the bottom of the drapes to make them hang evenly.
Add at least 3 inches to the measurement to account for the mounting hardware. If you have already chosen a manufacturer, they might specify the amount to add on their website. If not, choose from 3 to 6 inches according to how high above the door you want the drapes to extend.

A generic glass sliding door is usually fixed at 80 inches in length. However, the width might range between 60 72 inches and is exceedingly dependent on the amount of space you have to install it. The explanation behind keeping one standard dimension is to make everything convenient for the owners who are merely looking for the replacement and dont want the pain of going through the whole gamut of options available. Also, it is essential to remember that the sliding glass door may comprise different components such as a sliding glass window, a static glass installation, and multiple panels. So, if when we speak of sliding glass door dimensions, we need to understand that different sections of the sliding glass door are going to have completely distinct measurements.
Consider Mounting Options: At the time of taking a measurement of blinds for these doors, you will have to do the same so that the blinds can be fitted with outside mount. This is due to the fact that most often the door lacks the required depth to support an inside mount.
Consider Moulding: Oftentimes the sliding door consists of an encasing, and while taking a measurement, you will have to consider it as well. Normally, you should add two inches to blinds length for this purpose.
As such, you need to take the measurement from the floor and up to two inches above this molding. In case, there is no molding then you will have to take the measurement from the floor and up to two inches above openings top part.
When measuring the width of window treatments for sliding doors in the living room, start measuring from the moldings outside edge in left to right direction. Additionally, you should add two to six inches for maintaining desired privacy.
In addition, if you want to install two blinds on your sliding glass door then you should measure the width from the moldings outside part and up to the center. Moreover, you should add one to three inches for each of the blinds.
When measuring curtains for your sliding glass doors, take the width measurement from left to right of the door. For height, take the measurement from panelings top part up to the floor.
Additionally, you should add about three inches to your height measurement. These extra three inches will be compensating for the distance present between the top part of the door and the curtain pole.
Regarding the width, you can add extra inches at both ends, this way the curtains will be overlapping the door and the wall when in an open position.
Few of the aspects to consider with respect to measuring and fitting window treatments on sliding glass doors consist of:
Checking if there is enough room on the door frames inside section. This will ensure that when the door is opened or slides, it will not be hitting the blind.
Another thing to check is, will there be interference between the door handle and the blinds operation when you are opening or closing the blind.
Split the sliding door area so that 2 or 3 blinds are installed. This way each of the blinds can be independently operated.
Make sure that stacking of vertical blindor the chain side is on door openings opposite side. This way you will have the assurance that it will not get stuck when the door is opened.
When taking a measurement for height, ensure that enough space is left for rugs and mats that are kept on the floor.
70mm for roller blinds
50mm for vertical blinds
If youre measuring up for a new patio door, getting your measurements right is crucial to ensure it remains secure and efficient for as long as possible. Although SEHBAC will double-check all your measurements, its useful to get a rough idea of the size required first.
To measure the width, take 3 measurements; one at the top, one at the bottom and one in the middle of the opening, taking care to include the door frame. Do the same with the height; take one measurement from the right, one from the left and one from the middle, all the way to the concrete that the door sill rests on. The measurements should be fairly similar, but dont worry if there are slight variations as these can be addressed with door shims by your installer . Now all you need to do is take 10mm from both numbers, to allow for trim, casings, etc, leaving you with your final measurements. Dont forget to include the measurements for sidelights; illuminating panels positioned on either side of the door.
If youre unsure about anything, dont hesitate to contact SEH BAC and we will advise in any way we can.
This project will show you how to install a patio door with nailing fin. The exterior vinyl cladding around the door frame has to be removed before the door can be installed so the new door frame can be screwed into a strip and secured directly to the structure of the house. Install flashing and you will waterproof the opening of your new sliding patio door.
Note: waterproofing and finishing a finless patio door is different.
Always follow the manufacturers instructions for installing an exterior door.
We are going to hire somebody to replace our sliding glass patio door. Its a standard sliding glass patio door, similar looking to this:
I am going to buy the replacement door at auction, but first I need to know exactly what size door I need. I searched how to measure this online, but there appears to be contradictory advice on what the proper way to measure a patio door is.
Is there a proper way to measure the size door I need without removing the existing door first? Please include pictures if possible and define your terms if they are not terms a layman could understand.
The most critical part of getting your blinds to make a perfect fit is getting the doors measured accurately. To come up with the correct measurements you must take the following into considerations.
Step 1: Type of BlindsThere are two types of blinds, horizontal and vertical. Horizontal blinds are beautiful and are perfect for standard windows. For the large wide windows and doors, vertical blinds are more suitable. This is because sliding doors open on one side which exposes the door part while the rest of it remains covered. Cellular Honeycomb shades, pleated shades and roller shades are also good choice for sliding doors. If you opt for shades that go up and down then you need to decide whether you want one large shade/blind that will cover the whole door or you want to pieces, side-by-side shades that can be operated independently.
Step 2: Type of MountWhile inside mounts are fitted inside the window casing and do not cover the glass doors border, outside mounts are fixed on the wall and cover the molding around the window area. The type of mount you choose depends upon your preference. Vertical blinds are generally mounted on the outside where the headrail is mounted above the window opening on the wall. Most of the shades are however inside mount and covers the windows only and the wall at all. Take into consideration the handle of the sliding door, and if it is too big then you will have decide whether the inside mount will be practical.
The measuring instructions on this section provides you our customer, a typical way our installers measure for patio sliding screen doors when the old door is no longer available at the property. If you have an existing frame that is not bent, we recommend to provide the existing frame size width by height. Do not include wheels in the measurement .
The most common widths are 36 & 48. The most variation measuring slider screen doors and the most critical measurement is the height! Furthermore refer to the instructions below for height measuring, while making sure to use the right tool for the job.
Also, always use a heavy duty measuring tape with a blade width of minimum 1 Inch. Typical Blade Material Steel, Case Type Closed, Graduations 1/16 In. Stanley lock 25 ft. the old diehard contractors tape would do just fine and the way I personally use and prefer a Stanley Fat Max 25 ft!! Since it works great for large window and door openings.
The measuring process of a patio door or windows is performed from the same perspective looking from the inside to the outside. The figures should always be made in millimetres.
Example: Deduct 10 millimetres from the measured height of 2110 mm. The final value is 2100 mm. You determined two different figures for width ? Deduct 20 millimetres from 1230 mm. The final width is 1210 millimetres.
You can watch a detailed video manual about the measurement process of a patio door. It will also suggest further tips.
Regardless of whether you go for sliding doors or french doors, by now youll hopefully realise that your doors need to fit correctly. And that the only way to ensure this is to measure up accurately before you even start looking.
You will need to know the size of what is called the rough opening. This is the opening your doors sit in. It doesnt include any frames or mouldings.
As most people wont have the luxury of being able to completely remove their old door before they measure for a new one, make sure your measurements include the door frame. Remember they need to cover the whole opening.
