How To Get Rid Of Pee Smell On Patio

How To Get Urine Smell Out Of Porous Cement

How To Get Rid of Dog and Cat Urine from your Outdoor Turf and Patio.

Hello,

I’m usually at the Decor Forum here at GW but this has nothing to do with decor —– *holds nose*.

We’ve been redoing our back yard and making a new area just for relaxing.Problem is the area used to be our dog’s potty area.

Although she’s an indoor dog exclusively, when we are outdoors and she wants to be with us out there we gave Zayda a brand new potty area out back with a large area of grass, some textured cement , a plot of dirt because she likes a wet dirt mound to lie in when it’s hot and a mister along the brick wall, mainly to keep the dust down but for Zayda’s comfort too on hot days like today.

Sounds good, right? She loves her new area and barely ventures over to our area now.

Problem: Where we’ve set up our new area to relax, we keep getting the strong odor of dried urine…..it’s permeated the cement.I’ve sprayed the concrete floor of the area with diluted bleach, Fabreez, Mr. Clean and numerous other cleaning/disinfecting/odor minimizing solutions to no avail.

Years ago I worked with Parrots of all types in a commercial setting and we used Roccal to clean and deodorize….bought it by the case. I loved the stuff!

I decided to try and see if it was still available/still being made and Yikes! the price has gone way up!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Preventing Urine Smells In The Yard

If youd rather avoid than treat urine odors in your backyard, there are some options out there.

Disposable potty patches made with real or artificial grass can save your lawn from becoming a rest stop for your dogs.

Similar to pee pads, the small, portable lawn provides a spot for your dog to relieve themselves without damaging things under them.

Many apartment dwellers opt to use these on balconies for their smaller dogs its a more convenient solution than taking ten flights of stairs five times a day since dogs can only hold their pee so long!

Potty patches or dog lawns can be used outside as well, as an alternative to allowing your dog to urinate on the real grass.

Theyre more attractive than pee pads, as they mimic real grass or in some cases, actually are real grass.

Teaching a puppy to use a potty patch isnt much different than basic house training. And older dogs who are already house trained can be taught to use a dog lawn.

Lucky pet parents will find that their pet is naturally drawn to the dog lawn, and require little guidance to encourage regular use.

Some potty patches have disposable components, so you dont have to worry yourself with cleaning them.

Once it gets stinky, you can replace it.

Real grass potty patches can be composted and are biodegradable.

Others are washable with a hose and some detergent. Some work similarly to a litter box with a removable tray that needs emptying and cleaning.

You can even DIY a dog lawn, if youre ambitious.

How Can I Avoid Indoor Marking

If your doggie likes doing this, it might become a big problem. Indoor targets such as the family couch, corner table, plant flowers, and even door frames are common. If your furry companion continues to do it every day, the worst part of the situation would be how to remove that dog pee smell? Yes, itll be extremely unpleasant!

Although this is an important aspect of canine existence, youll have to educate your pet how to do it outside on a more frequent basis. If you have a dominant dog, neutering him may be necessary. This is since male dogs urinate more frequently than female dogs and tend to mark items as they do so.

This, in the long run, allows the dog urine odor to remain for months or even years following cleaning your carpet. Youll be wondering how to get rid of dog pee smell again after your dog continues to urinate on it.

The key to preventing indoor marking is to prevent it in the first place, and professional pet carpet cleaners can help with that. You may also try making your own preparations.

Use A Carpet Cleaner Machine

No doubt, this is the best way to get rid of the stains and urine caused by pets, as using carpet cleaning machines saves a lot of your time along with your effort. So, if your carpet has an old stain of urine on it, you have to use the carpet cleaning machine for pets with cold water, as hot water may further strengthen the bond between urine particles and fibers of the carpet.

Add a good quality enzymatic cleaner with cold water in the machine and start cleaning action. This is how the stain and odor or the urine both will eliminate from the carpet.

This is how you can remove the old dogs pee from your carpet. And at the end of the cleaning process, do not overlook the need to dry the carpet.

Next, slowly apply white vinegar everywhere that you put the baking soda. Youll definitely have a massive chemical reaction, so make sure youre wearing shoes. Itll start to fizz, which is exactly what you want to happen. This is the cleaning process that pulls the urine from the ground, eliminating the stains and odor.

Allow this solution to fizzle down until its no longer bubbling. Depending on the amount of white vinegar and baking soda you used, it may take a few minutes. A longer reaction time is generally better since it means that its been cleaning for a while.

Mix part hydrogen peroxide with tap water in a spray container. Once you have dried the urine, spray the area with the mixture and leave for 30 minutes. You can then rinse the area with water using an absorbent towel.

This method is most effective on light colored carpets and ceramic floors. It is not recommended for darker textiles, since oxygenated water can discolor them.

Whole House Smells Like Dog Urine: What To Do

When it comes to getting rid of dog urine smell, its it important to determine why your dog has started to pee in inappropriate places. If your dog is a puppy, you will need to educate it correctly. Read here about paper training for puppies. If, however, your adult dog is suddenly manifesting this behavior, pay attention to possible signs and symptoms of stress, depression, a need for routine change and more. In both cases, remember to consult your veterinarian to rule out the possibility of an underlying pathology. Also dont forget that when educating a dog, positive reinforcement is the most appropriate form.

Additionally, the use of products that contain ammonia, chlorine or bleach is prohibited. The smell of these products incites these animals and are toxic for dogs.

Although all of the above mentioned remedies function as excellent urine odor neutralizers, they are not a solution to the problem. In this case, the solution to eliminating dog urine smell in the house is by making sure your dog is happy and healthy, receives enough walks and exercise and is able to socialize with other dogs.

How Do I Remove The Urine

Firstly you need to find all the spots where urine might be on your concrete patio. Sometimes this is easy if you know your dog only pees in a particular place. If you have recently moved into the house, have a new pet who pees in different locations, or are not confident you know exactly where the urine is, you will need to be careful to identify all the urine locations on the concrete.

The best solution is to obtain a blacklight, which is a type of UV light. Remove your patio furniture and scan the concrete patio carefully in sections. Old urine stains will show up as green, yellow, or blue marks. As liquid can spread through concrete, make sure you do a thorough scan of the patio. It is worth scanning the walls and sides of the patio too. Marking the spots you find with chalk can help you remember the locations.

Sometimes the blacklight does not show any stains, even though the urine odors are present. You may have to resort to crouching down on the concrete and using your nose to identify the areas where the smell is coming from. An option many people take up is to decide to clean and treat all areas of the concrete patio to ensure no area of pet urine is missed.

Clean The Pet Urine Stains With Tsp

After you have identified where the urine is located, its important to properly clean the area to rid the concrete of bacteria and other residual urine elements. Contrary to popular belief, most enzymatic cleaners do not remove bacteria.

Once you know where the urine stains are, the first step will be to scrub the area with a strong solution of ½ cup TSP to 1 gallon of hot water. TSP mixed at this ratio is very strong. Gloves and eye protection should be worn for safety.

What the TSP does is remove all the bacteria, most if not all of the stain, as well as remove other residue left from the urine. It will leave only the uric acid crystals behind. This will allow the enzymatic pet urine cleaner to work faster and more efficiently at removing the uric acid crystals.

Pour the hot TSP solution onto the urine stain or identified area and scrub it with a short bristled nylon brush. A  works well for this. Make sure that you keep the area wet for at least 10 minutes or more to allow it to soak into the concrete. The solution will follow the same paths as the urine did and will need some time to work its way down into the concrete.

Do not be surprised if the smell increases as you soak the concrete. It is a combination of urine residue and the uric acid crystals reacting and releasing gas from contact with the water.

Firstly Use Water To Wash Dog Urine Away

The first thing you should do if you notice dog urine smell outside or have seen your dog urinate on concrete or tiles is to use water to wash it off with a hose. This will get rid of excess urine and should eliminate a lot of the smell.

Its especially important to rinse hard surfaces as soon as you discover urine as it can leave a stain if not removed quickly.

Using a sprinkler or hose on grass after urination also helps to reduce the chance of urine burn on grass from the nitrogen in your dogs urine. Nitrogen is actually good for your lawn, but too much can kill it. Encouraging your dog to drink more water can reduce the amount of nitrogen in their wee.

Find Where The Animal Has Urinated

Remove Pet Urine Odor From Concrete

First, Id suggest investing a black light to find the affected area and target your cleaning efforts. You most likely wont need to clean your entire outdoor area to get rid of the smell.

However, theres nothing necessarily wrong with wanting to clean the entire area. In fact, it may end up being the better choice, as the way were cleaning the animal urine will also clean the concrete. This will leave whichever area you clean a few shades brighter than the rest of the patio.

If you decide you want to target your cleaning efforts, I would suggest the following black lights for this purpose .

Two Ways To Remove Urine From Concrete

Natural-based chemists have figured out two very effective methods for getting the pet urine stink out of materials like concrete. As just mentioned, they involve using either ions or enzymes.

The first type uses positive ions to cancel out the negative ones that cause odor. Enzymatic treatments use live bacteria to literally eat and digest odor-causing molecules. Both types do their work at the molecular level.

Why wont household cleaners work?

Youve probably discovered you cant just clean off pet urine with soap and water or whatever concrete cleaner youre using.

It takes a few steps and some patience, coming together to help you rid the urine smell from concrete once and for all.

The history

Since 2008, Ive recommended on this page to first clean a urine odor spot on concrete using products like vinegar, TSP, baking soda or hydrogen peroxide. Then get at it with an enzyme cleaning product made for pet urine.

Its true these remedies have been helping pet owners tame urine odors and stains for generations. They arent perfect, but they do help.

Enzymatic cleaners for pet urine became wildly popular in the last decade or so and have been shown to improve urine smells at times.

Ive offered the enzymatic solution for years, and youll even see that all the other sites currently high on Google copied the exact process and steps directly from this page and have regurgitated this same information.

But is there a better way?

For example:

Scrub The Balcony With A Sponge

Get an abrasive sponge and start scrubbing away at the stain. Any area that had the baking soda and white vinegar should be scrubbed vigorously. Youll have to spend quite a bit of time since this is the most time-consuming portion of the entire process. However, its also the part that removes the urine the best.

If you dont have a sponge, there are all sorts of alternative solutions, including rough rags, steel wool , and scouring pads. All of these options will work just as well, as long as you spend at least 5 to 10 minutes scrubbing the surface.
