Asthma Gerd And Breathlessness

Many patients with asthma report heartburn and shortness of breath, as well as regurgitation and dysphagia . This may be, in part, due to the pressure incurred by wheezing and coughing, which can be strong enough to push stomach acid up into the esophagus.

No matter the cause, the link between GERD and asthma is now obvious. Thats why doctors are now on the lookout for GERD in asthmatic patients, especially if:

  • they developed asthma in adulthood.
  • episodes appear after eating, exercising, or lying down right after a meal.
  • their condition continues to worsen despite treatment.

The Link Between Gerd And Asthma

Researchers have also identified a link between GERD and asthma. A 2019 study suggested a bidirectional relationship between GERD and asthma. This means that people with GERD may be more likely to have asthma, and people with asthma may be more likely to experience GERD.

In fact, a 2015 study estimates that up to 89% of people with asthma also experience GERD symptoms. The reason for this may be due to how acid interacts with the airways. Acid in the esophagus sends a warning signal to the brain, which triggers the airways to contract. This, in turn, triggers asthma symptoms.

In cases of GERD-related asthma, treating the symptoms of GERD may help alleviate the symptoms of asthma.

As a 2016 review notes, asthma may also trigger GERD. During an asthma attack, the airways tighten, causing pressure in the esophagus. This increased pressure could encourage acid to leak into the esophagus.

Sometimes, it may be difficult to tell whether a persons symptoms are the result of asthma or GERD. For instance, a

Untreated or unmanaged GERD can lead to numerous health complications. Some examples include:

How Can Bloating Cause Palpitations What Is The Mechanism

At first sight, bloating and palpitations may seem unrelated to each other. But actually, there is a link between them: the Vagus nerve.

It is a cranial nerve which expands all the way through the brain to the heart and stomach. Also called the Wandering nerve due to its length, it serves as a highway transmitting signals from the brain to the heart and stomach and vice versa.

The mechanism how bloating can cause heart palpitations is as following:

1.;; Bloating is the buildup of gas in the gastrointestinal tract. The Gas expands the stomach and other organs of this tract, by putting pressure on the Vagus nerve.

Being under pressure, Vagus fails to work properly and is unable to transmit the crucial neurotransmitters that act to lower the heart rate.

2.;The pressure on the walls of the organs of gastrointestinal tract due to the gas buildup is mistakenly perceived by the heart as a stimulus to pump more blood in order to digest the eaten foods. The accelerated heart rhythm is perceived as a palpitation.

The Connection Between Copd And Abdominal Bloating

Bloating is a symptom that many people with COPD deal with on a regular basis, and it can make it more difficult to cope with the disease. However, despite how common bloating is among COPD patients, many doctors and patients don’t realize that the two conditions could be related.

Sometimes bloating is a direct result of COPD symptoms or medications, and sometimes it’s a result of COPD-related lifestyle changes and complications. For example, COPD often makes it difficult to stay active and eat a healthy diet, both of which increase your risk for bloating.

It also works in the opposite direction; being bloated can make COPD symptoms like breathlessness worse. Bloating causes swelling in your stomach and intestines, which causes them to push up on your lungs and diaphragm.

Many COPD patients also have enlarged lungs which require extra room to expand. This combined with the extra pressure that bloating puts on your lungs can make it especially difficult to breathe.

Having a bloated stomach can also make your breathlessness worse when you eat, especially if your lungs are enlarged. Many COPD patients struggle to breathe when they eat because their lungs have less room to expand when their stomach is full.

Bloating is usually described as a feeling of tightness, pressure, or stretching in the abdomen. It is often caused by gas trapped in your stomach or intestines, and it can even cause your stomach to visibly swell up.

    Link With Heart Disease

Breathing is not only contributed to by the lungs, but also by other organs such as the brain and the heart. When the heart does not function adequately as in the case of irregular patterns of contraction and in heart failure, the body will find it difficult to meet the demand created from eating a heavy meal. The reason being that an efficiently pumping heart is required to carry the blood that gets oxygenated in the lungs to the cells that are located in the intestines, which now require more oxygen to convert the digested food into energy.

This would result in rapid and shallow breathing that gives rise to breathlessness. In contrast to most other causes, shortness of breath due to heart ailments may not resolve with time. This means that a persistent breathlessness following meals should be brought to the attention of your medical practitioner and appropriate investigations should be performed.

Stomach Problems With Constant Shortness Of Breath

    tinygirl over a year ago

Hi,Last year in August, I got sick to my stomach after eating an afternoon meal. For two weeks I was unable to keep anything down had to get IV because I was dehydrating. I had all kinds of blood tests which came back normal, I had a ultrasound and an EKG which were both fine. I also had an upper GI done and that revelaed a hiatal hernia. My symptoms are ;shortness of breath which causes anxiety, because I feel I am suffocating, feel as if left side of my throat and nose close up, no energy, constantly yawning and strong palpiltations in my stomach I also can’t sleep well at night. Somedays are worse than others. I’m currently on Prozac and Xanax for Anxiety and Pepcid for my stomach. About a month ago, while asleep, I was awaken and this heat rush went through my entire body, my throat seemed to close, I was dizzy and shaky and my tongue felt swollen. It only lasted less than 5 minutes and once it went away, I began shaking because I was really cold. Has anyone experienced anything similar??? I’ve had this happen to me once since the first time and it happened last night again. Could it possibly have to do something with my stomach problems?? After the episode, I have a taste in my mouth like medicine . I don’t take aspirin because of my stomach problems. I’m really scared that something bad is happening to me!

    Manage Your Copd Symptoms

If breathlessness is causing you to get bloated or making you extra sensitive to bloating sensations, then the best thing to do is treat the underlying problem. Frequent bloating caused by shortness of breath may be a sign that you need to better manage your COPD symptoms.

One thing you can do is talk to your doctor to see if your treatment plan needs adjusting. You may need to try a new medication or change your medication dosage to help you breathe better throughout the day.

You could also try other COPD treatments to help you manage shortness of breath, including breathing exercises like pursed lips breathing. By helping you keep your breathing under control, these treatments could help reduce the amount of air you swallow and reduce your bloating symptoms.

Another option is supplemental oxygen, which many COPD patients use to help them breathe while they eat. Oxygen reduces breathlessness and can help with bloating in two ways: it reduces the chance of erratic breathing, which can cause you to swallow air and get bloated, and it makes it easier to breathe, which can make you less sensitive to mild bloating.
